Sockeye I/II

Sockeye is a completely new hull shape developed by the UVSRC, building on the knowledge we learned from Chinook. The Sockeye hull is taller than Chinook IV in order to increase hull stability, and allow for the use of a larger crankset to increase torque output, which will theoretically increase the maximum power transfer for a given propeller speed.

Sockeye competed in the 17th biennial International Submarine Race (ISR) at the Carderock Naval Warfare Center in Washington D.C. in 2023. The team was the 4th fastest submarine at competition, and the 3rd fastest in their category.

Sockeye II, the updated version of Sockeye, competed in the 2024 eISR, hosted by Qinetiq at their Haslar Marine Technology park located in Gosport, UK.

Sockeye II also has the distinction of being the first UVSRC submarine to compete in open water, having competed at the Gran Canaria Invitational hosted by the Sub Racing Series in the Canary Islands.
